Modeling Random Gyro Drift Rate by Data Dependent Systems

A new modeling procedure is presented in which a mathematical model for random gyro drift rate is obtained directly from the original observations without requiring any theoretical conjectures or preprocessing of the data. The adequate model so obtained confirms the presence of a random walk component causing the "steady state" drift and a stochastic component of the nature of correlated noise. It also provides a quantitative measure of the relative contribution of each component, useful in determining the quality of the gyro in guidance over extended periods.     

Knowledge Acquisition for ATE Diagnosis

An applied intelligence program for ATE fault diagnosis shows promise as an effective method to reduce mean time to repair (MTTR). The types of knowledge required by an intelligent diagnostic for VLSI test systems, the resources needed to derive that knowledge, the approach implemented to organize it, and the final form of the knowledge representations which resulted from our work are discussed in this paper.     

Application of remote sensing techniques in mineral resources survey — a case study pertaining to Singhbhum Shear Zone,Bihar, India

Geological analysis and evaluation of digitally processed and enhanced LANDSAT MSS data products for three test areas of Singhbhum Shear Zone, India has led to certain significant results regarding optimisation and utility of such techniques for geological studies and obtaining additional/new information regarding lithology and structure. Three band-to-band ratio images are found to give best results. Lithologic formations could be subdivided into a number of units. The Westward and southeastward extension of the shear zone could be delineated thereby indicating scope of mineralisation in these parts.     

Crystallization of metal alloys in microgravity and uniform compression conditions

This is an analysis of the experimental results to study the metastable phase formation while crystallization of binary metal melts in microgravity and quasi-isostatic (uniform) compression takes place. The alloy system PbSn serves as an illustration     

Ralicon anodes fabricated by electron beam lithography for image photon counting detectors

The Anger wedge and strip anode event location system developed for microchannel plate image photon detectors at the Space Sciences Laboratory of the University of California, Berkeley, has been extended in the present work by the use of electron beam lithography (EBL). Computer-aided design methods have been used to develop several types of RALICON ($\text{R}$eadout $\text{A}$nodes of $\text{Lit}$hographic $\text{Con}$struction) for use in photon counting microchannel plate imaging detectors. These anodes are suitable for linear, two dimensional or radial position measurements and they incorporate novel design features made possible by the EBL fabrication technique which significantly extend their application relative to published wedge-strip anode designs.     

Electromagnetic containerless undercooling facility and experiments for the shuttle

An electromagnetic furnace is being prepared for flights aboard the space shuttle. This apparatus is capable of melting metals and alloys up to 1400°C melting point by induction heating with subsequent solidification of the freely levitated melt without contact with any container. The solidification can be carried out with greatly reduced fields resulting in minimal heating and stirring of the free melt. Sequential specimens can be processed during flight. Several experiments are planned for a series of flights, beginning in 1985 with an undercooling experiment on NiSn alloys. These will be interspersed with detailed studies of fluid flow caused by low and high field levels in order to quantify the corresponding effect upon the solidification process.     

Genetic response of bacterial spores to very heavy ions.

Using spores of two Bacillus subtilis strains differing in repair capacity, we have studied repair and mutation induction in the spores after irradiation with very heavy ions up to uranium with specific particle energies up to 18.6 MeV/u. The results indicate that repair and mutation induction after heavy ion irradiation are closely related to each other and that both phenomena strongly depend on the atomic number and specific energy of the ions. The effects are discussed in comparison with results obtained after X-irradiation.     

Experimental Detection of Anomalous Mode-C Reports Using Radar Data

A new methodology to scan automated radar terminal system (ARTS-III) data for aircraft tracks exhibiting probable mode-C encoder/transponder faults is described. The tracks of more than 8000 climbing or descending aircraft, recorded at the Seattle-Tacoma terminal area, were analyzed using this method. Based on this sample, the probability of the previously recognized "stuck C-bit" error is estimated to be 0.44 percent (0.31-0.61 percent, 95 percent confidence). In addition, a new, more subtle error, here termed the "deficient response," was discovered which is estimated to occur with a probability of 0.77 percent (0.59-0.98 percent, 95 percent confidence). Subsequent tests found this new error to have much less impact on traffic alert and collision avoidance system (TCAS) performance than does the stuck C-bit error.     

Analysis of gravity-wave induced instabilities and turbulence viscosity parameters from optical emissions

The effects of gravity waves on OH and 5577 0I emissions have been used to investigate (1) the possible production of “secondary” waves or “ripples” by a “primary” wave; (2) the possible application of such observed optical emissions for computing atmospheric parameters such as turbulence viscosity in the mesospheric regions.
